Writing Coach

Several years ago I enrolled in one of the nation's top graduate creative writing programs. I decided not to complete the program, however, because I wasn't receiving the type of feedback and guidance I needed to complete my novel. Since then, I have been searching for someone with a keen eye for powerful storytelling to help me shape my writing. I have found that person in Sandra Byrd.

Sandra's review of my manuscript was a wonderful balance of specific praise and thoughtful questioning. Her suggestions were insightful, and not invasive or inconsiderate; she spent a great deal of time thinking of ways to help me to keep the reader engaged in the story. My novel is stronger because of that.

Your secret weapon - an experienced writing coach.

Although no one can guarantee or predict publication, I can help you make your manuscript the very best, tightest, most engaging piece it can be.

I can help because Iíve been in the publishing business for two decades:
as an acquisitions editor, so I know what editors are looking for
as a published author, so I know how to get that manuscript from flawed to faultless
as a writing coach and mentor, so I know how to help you refine your voice and your message and build toward a successful career

Manuscript Critique
When you submit your article to a magazine, your book proposal or manuscript to an agent or editor, or put forward your book for self publication, you'll want it to be a compelling page-turner. An agent or editor will glance at your query, submission or proposal for only a minute or two before deciding to read further or not. If it passes the first glance, he will read only a few pages more before deciding to read on or reject it. Make sure your work is one of those she keeps reading.

Iíll look at big picture issues such as organization, idea and/or plot progress, thesis and theme, tension, takeaway message, character development and other concerns that mark the difference between a book thatís salable and one thatís not. Iíll point out conventions issues ń organization, grammar, punctuation ń so that your reader/editor isn't slowed down or tripped up by minor missteps.

Individual Project Coaching
You have the book in mind, you may have even started it, but now you're stuck. How do you finish? Is it any good? Where do you go from here? I offer a select number of weekly, ongoing, one-on-one coaching appointments via telephone and IM. These sessions are tailored to your specific writing goals and desires
