Asking For Trouble

I hung back at the doorway to the cafeteria of my new supercool British school, Wexburg Academy. The populars, whom I’d secretly nicknamed the Aristocats, commanded an entire table right in the center of the room. Their good looks and posh accents made up the sun around which all other tables orbited.
I skipped lunch, went back into the hallway, and glanced at a flyer on the wall. One sentence caught my eye right away: “Looking for one experienced journalist to join the newspaper staff.”
I yanked the flyer off the wall and jammed it into my bag. I was experienced. Wasn’t I?
A nub of doubt rose inside me—the kind that popped up, unwelcome, any time I tried to rationalize something that wasn’t exactly true or right.
This time I swallowed it back. I lived in London now.
It was time to take matters into my own hands.

When her family moves to London, 15-year-old Savvy Smith has to make her way in a new school and in a new country. She just knows the school newspaper is the right place for her, but she doesn’t have the required experience and the cute editor-in-chief is not looking to train anyone. She has to come up with a way to prove herself and nab the one available position on the newspaper staff at Wexburg Academy.

Byrd's ability to provide a fun story that incorporates biblical truth will
help teens relate to this new series. Readers will identify with the struggle to fit in while staying true to one's convictions.

Through Thick & Thin

That was it. A tiny little article in the corner of the fourth page of the third section of the paper. To someone else, it probably meant nothing. They might have ignored it completely or even used it to wipe away fish and chips grease.
But not me. I was a long-time subscriber to Teen Vogue, a fashion window-shopper extraordinaire, a girl who spent all her hard-earned babysitting money on recent designs. I was also a girl desperate to have her own byline in the school paper. Maybe then I would have more in common with someone like Penny. And I had to admit, not that I was proud of the fact, that it would be nice to scoop Hazelle too, since she had been nothing but sour milk to me. I knew that no one, not even my very fashionable mentor, Melissa, covered fashion for the school paper.
My assignment was clear. I had to find a way into that photo shoot. And then get Jack to allow me to write a feature article for the Wexburg Academy Times.

Savvy Smith, 15, sees her chance to write a full column in the paper, making her name and making her way in her new hometown near London, England. But the choices she faces when given the chance to choose between friends, family, and fame may turn her dream into a nightmare.
